Going botanical – more about Mount Tomah Botanic Gardens
Our holiday in New South Wales
September 2007
Yesterday I wrote about our visit to Mount Tomah Botanic Gardens. These gardens are in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. These extensive gardens are landscaped into the side of the mountain. The walking tracks, however, are not too steep. In fact many of the walking tracks are suitable for wheelchairs.
The gardens also include a restaurant, bookshop and visitor information centre. We didn’t try out the food but the bookshop stocks an extensive range of book, cards, paintings and other items related directly to things botanical.

Our holiday in New South Wales

One of the places we wanted to visit during this holiday was the Mount Tomah Botanic Gardens in the Blue Mountains north west of Sydney. On the drive from Lithgow to the gardens we had driven through some quite heavy rain showers. It was looking gloomier by the minute, so when we arrived we armed ourselves with umbrellas expecting the worst. It never rained a drop while we were there.
During our visit I was on the lookout for birds, especially those I hadn’t seen on the trip to that point. I chased a beautiful Superb Fairy-wren around some bushes but he was too slick for me, constantly hopping along the ground. I was also pleased to see some White-browed Scrubwrens but the photos didn’t turn out. They are also fast movers and hard to focus on. I heard an Eastern Whipbird but couldn’t find him in the undergrowth.

It had been over thirty years since our last visit to Lithgow. And that continues unchanged as we drove straight through as we did at Bathurst. We really do need to have a few days – or weeks exploring this area.
From Lithgow we started climbing up in the Blue Mountains in earnest. The roads there are very steep in parts until one reaches the upper ridges. From that point we often followed the ridge tops. One little incident concerned us; a truck driver with a heavy load was stuck on a very sharp, steep corner. He was not going anywhere fast. We were able to safely sneak past carefully and allow him to get going again.
A short distance on we stopped to visit the railway station where the famous Zig-Zag Railway starts. The train came in while we were there and we were very tempted to go for a ride on the train. Next time perhaps. We found a nice spot for lunch nearby before heading on again to our next destination, Mount Tomah Botanic Gardens.
More about that tomorrow.

After leaving Cowra, albeit a little later than planned, we took the road to Bathurst. We basically drove straight through this lovely rural city, only stopping for fuel on the eastern side of town. This is the second time we have just driven through Bathurst. It is about time we spend several days exploring this interesting area.
This part of our tour takes us through the mountains for the first time. After four days of driving through very flat country it was a very pleasant change. The country is very attractive with green rolling hills in every direction. Because we didn’t stop I don’t have any photos to show you of this area. (We only stopped to refuel; posting a photo of a fuel station would inspire very few of my readers.)
After leaving Bathurst we travelled on towards Lithgow. A short distance out of town we took a side road and found a spot to have morning tea. We stopped in a lovely rural setting, not our usual picnic spot.
