Strange birds at Bateman’s Bay

One of the most unusual sights I have seen was at the waterfront in Bateman’s Bay on the south coast of New South Wales.
Not one – but about a dozen Australian Pelicans were standing or sitting on the light covers in the street. I’ve never seen them perching like this before and it was so unusual in my opinion that I had to stop and take a photo.

In NSW we know it is not safe to park your car or walk underneath these light fittings. Notice those white stripes! They aren’t toothpaste!
True Ken, it seems very hazardous indeed. I’ve been deposited upon by sparrows, honeyeaters and even pigeons. What kind of damage a pelican would do I hardly can imagine. One would probably end up smelling a little fishy!
I’ve also heard of pelicans flying over a road and leaving a large deposit on the windscreen of a passing car. Rather hazardous I’d say, not to mention the shock to the driver and occupants who didn’t expect such an explosion in front of their eyes. Might also obliterate vision as well.
Jan always finds it funny when I come back from the south coast that I scrape off the droppings to put in the compost heap. Hey, it’s phosphate.
