Spotted Hyenas, Monarto Zoo, South Australia

On a recent visit to our local zoo at Monarto we took several guided bus trips through the various enclosures. One of these enclosures contains a pack of Spotted Hyenas, shown in the photos on this post.  The breeding programme at this zoo has been very successful and we obtained good views of at least one of the babies.

  1. Lovely photos, thanks for sharing! I love going to Monarto Zoo, and I went to see the pandas at Adelaide Zoo the other week. They have a terrific set up there, but obviously Monarto is better (for the animals)

Hi, I’m sorry to tell you that they are Hyenas, not Painted Dogs.
The Painted Dogs are smaller in the body & slimmer. They don’t actually have spots, the Painted dogs have dark patches on their brown coats. No two are the same pattern.
Monarto does have both of these Animals in residence. I have been there 3 times so far. I love the bus tour.
Anyway, your photos are very good. Wish I was as good at using a camera.

Thanks for visiting Carolyn. I must take the time to visit the pandas at Adelaide Zoo soon – I didn’t want to go during the early rush to see them.

  4. Trevor says:

    Thanks Trish.

    RED FACE TIME.

Of course they are hyenas – the painted dogs look quite different. I should have known the difference. I remember writing this article late one night recently when I was under pressure for time and very tired. Not a good combination – the brain melt down is understandable (but inexcusable) in those circumstances.

I have amended the captions on each photo and edited out some parts of the article as a result.

Thanks for being so alert to my basic error. I appreciate it. (Red face returns to normal.)
