The South Steyne Floating Restaurant
South Steyne floating restaurant, Darling Harbour, Sydney
The South Steyne is one of Sydney’s old ferries. We passed it while walking through Darling Harbour on our recent holiday in Sydney. It is permanently moored there now and is used as a floating restaurant and function centre. It has a long an interesting history. The following is taken from its website:
The S.S. South Steyne is a 224′ (70 metre)
long steamship making it the world’s largest operational steam ferry. Built in Leith, Scotland for the Port Jackson and Manly Steamship Company, the South Steyne was launched on April 1st, 1938 and on July 7th 1938, it steamed the 22,000 kilometres to Australia arriving on September 19th the same year. The South Steyne has been an icon of Sydney since 1938. As the famous Manly ferry, it crossed between Circular Quay and Manly over 100,000 times over its 36 years, carrying well in excess of 92 million passengers.

After our visit to the Queen Victoria Building and lunch, we caught a train for a short distance and then walked through Hyde Park. The statue of Queen Victoria presides over the traffic around Hyde Park.

On our holiday in Sydney late last year our son suggested that we have a look at the Queen Victoria Building in the city. This historic building contains dozens of interesting specialty shops. I was more interested in the building, the beautiful architecture and the wonderful ambiance of the whole building. Not many shopping centres present in this way, especially modern buildings.

After a very pleasant time in this building and its interesting shops, we found a nearby food mall. Sure it was like feeding time at the zoo with every man and his family trying to find a table to use.
Admittedly we were rather optimistic seeing it was between Christmas and New Year. Actually we didn’t have all that much trouble finding a table for four which was surprising. I had a large plate of delicious pasta which more than made up for the crowded conditions.

The Susannah Place Museum in the Rocks district of inner Sydney preserves some of the social history of this interesting part of Australia. This group of terrace houses was built in 1844 and has been in continuous use ever since. Now it is only a museum, but one of the houses was still occupied a few years ago.
Relics from the past, Susannah Place Museum, Sydney
Each of the former homes have been decorated and furnished in a different era of its history. Moving through the various homes and rooms in each home on the guided tour is like walking through the pages of early Australian history.
This museum is only a short walk from Circular Quay in central Sydney. It has proved to be very popular with tourists and locals wanting to taste a little of Sydney’s past.
