On the second day of our trip to Sydney earlier this year we set of from Narrandera early after breakfast. It was a cool morning and the mist gave an eerie, gloomy atmosphere for the first hour or so. During this time we drove through the rural city of Wagga Wagga. On several other occasions we have stopped in this beautiful city, especially to visit the beautiful botanic gardens near the city centre. As we were on a tight schedule we pushed on, driving straight through. Our next stop was near Gundagai.

We arrived at the ‘Dog on the Tuckerbox’ roadside stop in time for morning tea. More about this famous dog in coming days. After refuelling we found a lovely picnic area for a break.

The air was still crisp but we were pleased to find a sunny spot to have a cup of tea. The autumn leaves in in this area made a beautiful picture. I will feature them in a post in a few days’ time.

Road trip: Murray Bridge to Narrandera

Narrandera, New South Wales

On the first day of our road trip to Sydney earlier this year we covered a lot of territory on the first day. We left home in Murray Bridge early in the morning , had morning tea at Lameroo, lunch at Ouyen and arrived in Narrandera in the dark for a late dinner. Along the way we didn’t stop much, only to change drivers or to grab a quick bite to eat.

As we drove I kept a lookout for birds, making short lists here and there, especially taking note of interesting birds. I’ve already written about some of these on my  Trevor’s Birding site. Instead of repeating that here, I’ve made some links back to that site:

It was a very tiring day of driving and we were pleased to have arrived at our motel in Narrandera. Even though this was near the intersection of two very busy highways,  the noise of trucks throughout the night couldn’t keep us awake.

Happy Birthday to my blog

This blog about my travels is now four years old.

I started this blog exactly four years ago in the dining room of my son in Sydney. He had just set up the domain name and busily went about teaching me how to blog. He was a good teacher for I was soon off and away with blog entries. And I haven’t let up in the intervening years. I try to post every day but during the last two years I have also been trying to complete my Master of Arts in Creative Writing which has impacted on how frequently I have been able to write articles here. I’m also in the last stages of completing the writing of a novel for children as part of those studies. It has all taken a lot of my time.

During the life of this blog I have written about many places, including a visit to Thailand and trekking in Nepal. By far the majority of the nearly 600 articles are as a result of travelling here in Australia, including New South Wales, Victoria, Australian Capital Territory and my home state of South Australia of course.

I’d like to thank all my many regular readers, those who have occasionally dipped into various pages and especially those who have taken the trouble to leave comments. I value you all – you people make this blog a worthwhile endeavour.

A special thanks to my son Sim’ who looks after the background administration of this and my other blogs, keeping them ticking over nicely.

As we travelled south that afternoon we passed through many lovely areas and some beautiful towns.  This part of the journey was new territory to us. We had seen the coast further south west in Victoria and to the north in NSW, but had never visited the stretch of coastline between Bermagui and Mallacoota.

When it came time for afternoon tea we aimed for the lovely town of Eden. We drove down to the bay and found a suitable picnic seat overlooking the magnificent bay. The beach was quite crowded with people from the caravan park walking distance away. It was  a very relaxing break from driving.

While we had our cuppa a family of Superb Fairy-wrens decided to join us. The male put on quite a show for us in the nearby bushes, posing nicely for my camera.

One of the places I wanted to revisit on our drive south along the coast of New South Wales was Mimosa Rocks National Park. The last time we had been there was in 1981 which was getting on for 30 years ago. Too long, in fact.

I had vivid memories of what it looked like but obviously the years had blurred the image. It was nothing like I remembered! In fact, I think we went to a different part of the park this time. The access roads may well have changed in that time too.

Again, we didn’t have much time to explore the park. We had a quick lunch and a look at the beautiful beach and then off again on our trek south.

The only birds of interest were three Pied Oystercatchers patrolling the beach.
