While travelling through the Murray-Sunset National Park last year during our holiday we came across this lovely Bearded Dragon, one of many species of lizard common here in Australia. He stopped and posed beautifully for me in the late afternoon sun.

Below is a photo of the track we were following when I saw the lizard. The plants are predominantly mallee trees which are species of eucalyptus. The bush here stretches in every direction for many kilometres. It would be very easy to get lost in thick scrub like that, so one does not wander far from the track.

Our holiday in new South Wales and Victoria

September 2007

While visiting Mildura in north west Victoria we spent several happy hours looking around the various plantings in the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens. We had a great time taking photos of the various native plants on display. Many were in flower which was good. I also had a good time adding to my bird list for the trip.

Our holiday in Victoria

September 2007

On our last day in Victoria we briefly went back over the River Murray into New South Wales. We went to visit the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens. This meant that we had visited five different botanic gardens during our four week holiday.

We had previously visited these gardens some four or five years before. It was only in the early stages of development then.  This time we could see the vast changes that had occurred during the intervening years. Extensive plantings of both natives and exotics (which we didn’t go to see) have made these gardens well worth the visit. Besides – entrance is currently free. That may change in the future.

Our holiday in Victoria

September 2007

Cranbourne Botanic Gardens are about an hour drive south east of Melbourne (if there is no traffic hold up on the freeway). This was one of the main reasons we travelled along the southern coast of eastern Victoria. We had visited these gardens several times before, but not for many years. As it turned out, we only had about two hours there but we did manage to go for a walk through the bush area of the gardens. We didn’t have time to visit the new planted and landscaped area. That will have to wait until our next visit.

During this walk we managed to see a nice selection of native Australian plants. It was a little disappointing that few were in flower. This is probably because of the dry winter and the early timing of our visit. If we had delayed our visit by three to four weeks much more would have been in flower. All this means is that another visit sometime is a must.

Our holiday in New South Wales

September 2007

On our recent holiday in New South Wales, ACT and Victoria we visited five different botanic gardens. While in Sydney we spent an afternoon in the Royal Botanic Gardens which are within an easy walk of the CBD.

While we were generally quite disappointed in the representation of Australian native plants in the gardens, we did find two small sections with a few interesting plants. Some of these were in flower at the time so our cameras naturally came out of their cases. The photos shown here are just a few of the nicer plants in flower.
