Roman ruins of Volubilis in Morocco

Roman ruins at Volubilis in Morocco

Over recent days I have been sharing photos I took during our visit to the ancient Roman ruins at Volubilis in Morocco.Today I share a few more.

We had several hours of wandering around these fascinating structures, trying to image life here back in first century AD when this town was a bustling commercial and cultural centre. The writer in me wanted to know some of the stories of the people who once lived here. If only the stones could tell.

The Roman ruins at Volubilis in Morocco are an UNESCO World Heritage site, with good reason. This ancient city housing about 20,000 people in the first century AD was first settled in the third century BC. Only recently has the extent of the city been discovered, and archaeological digging continues.

I found our visit to  this site an amazing experience. I had no idea the Romans had settled in this part of Morocco. You can read about the history of these ruins here.

I’ll be sharing more photos of the ruins in the coming days.

Bab el-Khemis Gate, Meknes in Morocco

Bab el-Khemis Gate in Meknes, Morocco

One of the features of our visit to Meknes in Morocco was to see this magnificent structure, the Bab el-Khemis Gate. The ancient wall stretched from it in both directions and the nearby gardens were immaculate. We were able to stop and alight from our tour bus to take photos of the wall, the gate and the gardens along the thoroughfare running through the gate.

Mausoleum of Mohammed V, Rabat, Morocco

Outside the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, Rabat, Morocco

This courtyard just outside the mausoleum of former King Mohammed V in Rabat, Morocco is another fine example of beautiful architecture found throughout many parts of the country. Pity about the air conditioning units along the wall behind the fountain. Knowing their climate, this is probably a concession to the vagaries of challenging temperatures.

Below I’ve included several close-up photos of details on the wall at the rear of the courtyard.

The inside of the mausoleum of Mohammed V in Rabat, Morocco was one of the many magnificent buildings we visited on our tour of the country. From the outside it looks like many other beautiful buildings, but once inside the true beauty of this monument can be fully appreciated, as shown in today’s photos.

The photo above shows the amazing artwork in the domed ceiling. The first one below shows details of the mosaics on the walls. The final two photos today show the detail of the fountain in the courtyard just outside.
