Last year we went to visit friends of ours in the Adelaide Hills. Like us, they are keen growers of Australian native plants. We had a lovely lunch with them before heading out into the garden to look at their collection of plants. While my wife collected cuttings (so she could propagate them) I was busy with my camera. I’ll show some of the photos taken over the next few days.

Wittunga Botanic Garden is one of several gardens that make up the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. It was first established as a private garden but has been open to the public for some time now. The plant collection has a mixture of both Australian native plants and exotic plants from many countries.
The gardens are well laid out and maintained with wheel-chair friendly paths throughout. large expanses of lawn near the car park and elsewhere cater for picnickers – or people who just enjoy being in a well kept natural environment.

Botanic gardens are excellent places to hone your photography skills. I particularly enjoy taking photos of the many birds that tend to congregate in such places. But birds have a habit of flying off just as you focus on them!
Plants and flowers are different. They tend to stay in the same place making photography much easier – except when they are swaying in the breeze. When that happens I usually ask my wife to hold the branch still, trying not to get her hand or arm in the shot.

My wife and I always enjoy wandering through botanic gardens when we are away from home, travelling or visiting places where there are gardens open to the public. My main interest would have to be the bird life, but I also enjoy taking photos of the scenery, especially the plants that are flowering.

With plenty of lawn areas and picnic tables, Wittunga Botanic Gardens are an ideal place to relax. On my visit late last year I had a picnic lunch in the shade of one of the lovely eucalypt trees prominent in the gardens. Unfortunately I ate alone; my wife was unable to come with me on this occasion.
After lunch I strolled around some of the gardens trying to photograph some of the local birds. They were being shy and I didn’t see many. So I managed some lovely shots of trees, plants and flowers instead.
