Sights of Fes in Morocco

Toy shop in Fes, Morocco

The streets of Fes in Morocco – like all cities and towns we visited – are a constant delight with the many sounds, colours and aromas we are just not used to here in Australia. It was hard to take it all in, take photos, avoid bumping into the milling crowds everywhere AND keep one eye on our tour guide and the rest of the tour group.

In today’s photos I feature a soft toy shop (above), a dentist’s sign (below) and several street scenes (below).

Fish shop in Fes, Morocco

While wandering the streets of Fes during our visit to Morocco I was constantly surprised by the sights: the colours, sounds, smells and the wide variety of items for sale. Near where I took the photo above of fish for sale there were vegetable stalls, a butcher shop, another selling glasses and watches, yet another selling umbrellas and a few steps away one specialising in chickens (see photo below).

I was actually intrigued by the chickens in the photo below. They seemed quite docile and content to just sit on the scales until they were weighed. If you look closely you can see another one trussed up in a plastic bag. I’m not sure if it was still alive or not.

I found it intriguing to see the vast variety of items for sale in the streets and medinas of Moroccan cities like Fes. Today’s photos show a range of vegetables and fruits for sale. Next door a large collection of umbrellas, watches and glasses.

Inside a shop in Meknes, Morocco

On most days of our tour of Morocco we saw interesting and fascinating places.  The scenery was often quite different to what we are used to here in Australia. I also found fascination in the small things, the ordinary and everyday common things to local eyes are often what is interesting to the visitor. In wandering the streets and laneways, the medinas and bazaars, the sights were just as arresting as the beautiful countryside.

Is that a camel hanging there?

Street vendor in Meknes, Morocco

Street vendors like the one above in Meknes are a common sight in many towns and cities in Morocco. The visitor – and locals – usually do not have far to walk far to find what they need to buy.

And just around the corner was a compact shop selling just threads. The colourful display (see photo below) means that almost any colour was available.

By way of amazing contrast, nearby was a butcher shop, shown in the third photo today (see below). Yes – that is a camel’s head hanging there. Not sure how one would cook that to eat it – perhaps it was merely a ploy to attract customers and wasn’t for sale. I wasn’t game to ask our guide for fear of making an almighty blunder and cause some kind of offence.

It was just one more fascinating sight in this wonderful place called Magical Morocco.
